This clinic is larger than all of the VA facilities in Hawaii combined. Hawaii has the largest catchment area in the country and we don’t have a Snoopy and Woodstock Turkey Happy Thanksgiving Mugs shirt. All we have is the main clinic on Tripler AMC and one outpatient clinic on Oahu and then 3-4 clinics on the outer islands. Don’t get me wrong it has gotten better in the last 18 years I have been here but we still don’t have most specialties and inpatient care is referred to Tripler or other community providers… eventually. It might take you a couple of months to get a referral and authorization number before you can actually get an appointment scheduled and that might be a month or more away but that’s an improvement over what was available 18 years ago.

I worked in Oncology and it took the VA 6 months to send a referral for a Veteran with a Snoopy and Woodstock Turkey Happy Thanksgiving Mugs shirt. His tumor obviously progressed. I worked there for 18 years and have seen some bad things. I now house homeless Veterans for a living under a VA grant. So yes I have a problem with it. Half of these Vets are homeless because of this drawn out process of Service Connected Disability.
